Mission Statement
“Our mission in English at The Island Free School is to help you find your voice and empower you to be able to read between the lines. You will learn key reading, writing and speaking skills that will help you to feel confident to communicate your ideas now and in later life and to achieve your aspirations. Through our ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum, you will also be inspired to develop an appreciation for literature and the English language beyond your local context. You will study both English Literature and English Language, in ever increasing depth, because the two subjects go hand in hand. How can you study a novel if you do not understand how the English Language works? How can you create your own masterpiece if you haven’t read a range of texts? In lessons and tasks that are varied, engaging and exciting, you will be encouraged to form and share an opinion, take risks and ask questions not only about what you are studying, but also about the world and how it works”.

Year 7
What will my child be learning this term?
– Transformations
– Pupils will study Greek Myths, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.
– Pupils will develop analytical and creative writing skills.
How will my child be assessed this term?
– Pupils will complete a reading (PEA) assessment and a writing assessment in class, before completing a cumulative assessment.
What will my child be learning this term?
– Media and Me
– Pupils will study The Truman Show as well as newspaper writing.
How will my child be assessed this term?
– Pupils will write a monologue as a character from The Truman Show and pupils will complete a PEA comparison on two newspaper articles.
– Pupils will also complete a cumulative assessment on reading and writing.
What will my child be learning this term?
– Great British Writers and the Environment
– Pupils will explore the work of well-known British writers including Wilfred Owen and Roald Dahl.
– Pupils will also develop their understanding of non-fiction writing when considering our impact on the environment.
How will my child be assessed this term?
– Pupils will complete two in class assessments and will then be tested in their end-of-year exam.
Year 8
What will my child be learning this term?
– Redemption in Literature
– Pupils will consider how the theme of redemption is presented in Romeo and Juliet, non-fiction texts and A Christmas Carol.
How will my child be assessed this term?
– Pupils will complete two class assessments (one reading and one writing) before completing a cumulative assessment.
What will my child be learning this term?
– Time Travel and Travel Writing
– Pupils will explore the history of the English Language, develop non-fiction writing skills and explore modern poetry.
How will my child be assessed this term?
– Pupils will complete a PEA assessment on the presentation of The Merchant from The Canterbury Tales and they will also write a description of a holiday destination.
– Pupils will also complete a cumulative assessment that will test their reading and writing skills.
What will my child be learning this term?
– Dystopian Fiction and The Gothic
– Pupils will study dystopian and gothic fiction, practising their analytical and creative writing skills.
How will my child be assessed this term?
– Pupils will complete two in class assessments and will then be tested in their end-of-year exam.
