What will I learn?
You will learn basic textiles skills, using a variety of hand and machine techniques, which might include batik, felt, screenprinting and applique. This will include designing, researching, making and evaluating textiles products. Drawing and writing are important components of all Art & Design courses and you will learn how to analyse your own work and the work of professional designers.
How will I be assessed?
Unit 1 – Portfolio Coursework 60%
You will create a portfolio of work, which demonstrates your working process (via sketches, notes, textile studies etc.) as well as the final products. You must evaluate and make informed connections with the work of artists and textile designers. The themes are set by the teacher but you are encouraged to make a personal response. Homework is set regularly and is integral to the portfolio.
Unit 2 – Externally set assignment 40%
You will choose a starting point from a list of themes set by the exam board. Over three months you will produce preparatory work prior to the final 10 hour period which is usually completed over two days.
Are there any entry requirements?
You should be creative, independent and imaginative. You should have an interest in fashion.
Where could it lead?
You may continue to study at A Level which can lead to a career
in fashion design and journalism, costume design, print design, blogging.
What would complement this course?
English and Drama. Textiles offers you the opportunity to study a subject of a practical nature.
