The Island's first choice for parents

The Island Free School opened in 2014 and is now at full capacity in a purpose built school. The school was established by highly experienced teachers, parents and members of the local business community united in a passion for education and life long learning.

The school is smaller than many and has an excellent staff to pupil ratio. You can see our team here.

Our school community is committed to providing the very best education for the children of the Isle of Wight.

Our mission statement

Nurturing Excellence: Empowering Pupils to Fulfil Their Potential

This is an inspirational, high achieving and caring school. We will raise expectations and encourage independent thinking, so that every pupil reaches their full potential.

Embracing Music Education for All

As a music specialist school, everyone will have the opportunity to play an instrument.

Cultivating Excellence in Every Pupil

We will expect pupils to work hard and behave in an exemplary way.

Fostering Success through Compassionate Education: Unlocking Each Pupil's Potential

Pupils will follow an academic curriculum enhanced by sports, creative and community activities.

Embracing Value and Pride

Our pupils will feel valued and proud to be part of the learning community.

Inspiring Learning through Exceptional Teaching, Resources, and Care

We will provide unrivaled teaching, resources and pastoral care.

That's why our motto is nulli secundus.

which is Latin for 'second to none'.

Our seven point promise

1.

We are a caring school and small enough for each pupil to be known. All pupils are encouraged to reach their full potential, with academic and pastoral support.

2.

Pupils are offered a disciplined grammar school education in a comprehensive setting. The curriculum is built around the core subjects and the English Baccalaureate.

3.

Our pupils are encouraged to think for themselves. We value creativity and artistry and every pupil benefits from our expertise in music (we are a music specialist school).

4.

We are ambitious and have the highest expectations of pupils and staff. We will ensure that pupils make good to outstanding progress in all areas, through rigorous, robust monitoring.

5.

We are innovative. Our school day is longer than others, with a mandatory hour at the end of the day for extra-curricular enrichment activities and supported learning.

6.

All of our teachers are passionate about learning. Staff are our most valuable asset and we will ensure that they feel valued and supported through an outstanding recruitment and retention package.

7.

We are an Island school for Island families, giving parents a real choice for their children’s education.  We are proud of the school community we have created – a school that is nulli secundus (second to none).
